[EN] Most of the nearly 1 O million hectares of forested lands lost in the Peruvian Amazon over the past 60 years are degraded or abandoned. lnitiatives to restare forest cover on these lands have multiplied over the past decade; however, few efforts have been evaluated critically to derive lessons and recommendations, and they have been poorly disseminated. The study looked at past and ongoing forest rehabilitation initiatives in the Peruvian Amazon, particularly those involving small-scale farmers. The article describes the research methods, main results, conclusions and recommendations of the study. Most initiatives were executed by NGOs and public institutions. While NGOs aimed to improve the quality of life of the local population and to recover degraded soils, public institutions mainly sought to restare forest cover. Three technologies were promoted: reforestation with tree species (native, exotic or a combination), agroforestry systems, and secondary regeneration management. The main achievement recognized was an increase in their knowledge about managing and conserving natural resources in the target areas. Expansion of the forested area was smaller than originally envisaged. Ecological, socio-economic and institutional factors influenced the devetopment of rehabilitation initiatives. The lessons learned from the study emphasize the need for adequate funding, opportunities to market tree species with short-harvesting cycles, the need to better link with markets and to add value to products from rehabilitated areas. Rehabilitation initiatives have a higher chance of success when they incorporate traditional knowledge and ensure active local participation from the beginning.es_PE
